Mahuka kogumiku ülesehituse aluseks on Ernst Enno (1875–1934) neli luulekogu: „Uued luuletused”, „Hallid laulud“, „Valge öö“ ja „Kadunud kodu“. Avatsükli „Üksilduse maa“ ja lõpetava tsükli „Kumendavad rannad“ moodustavad kogudes avaldamata luuletused. Ernst Enno on eesti luule puhtakujulisemaid ja sugestiivsemaid lüürikuid. Juhan Liivi ja Gustav Suitsu kõrval andis just tema 20. sajandi esimeste kümnendite jooksul suuna uuele, isikupärasele, moodsale luulele Eestis.
