Susan and Peter are going back home for holidays after a semester in a boarding school. They can't wait to see their parents and younger siblings and enjoy the festive period with their family. As the whole family prepares for a traditional Christmas, the children are curious to know more about the holiday, the Christmas tree, the Santa Claus so they get to hear all the charming stories and tales about the history and customs of Christmas.

Captain and Mrs. Arnold are flying off in their plane, the White Swallow, and apparently have crash-landed in a remote part of Africa. The Arnold children, home from school and in the care of a family friend, Miss Dimity, team up with their friend, Prince Paul of Baronia, and go flying off in his royal plane to Africa to rescue their parents – and get tangled up with a strange and secretive African tribe with flaming red hair and living within secret tunnels and caves inside a mountain.
Peggy Arnold, and younger twin siblings Mike and Nora, are living with a harsh aunt and uncle after their parents are thought to have been killed in a plane crash. Aided by Jack, an orphan boy they have befriended, they run away to an island on a nearby lake, and together they make a new home constructed with the branches of a willow tree, this much-loved «living house» being one of the highlights of the story.
